This piece was inspired by a life-long fascination with The Alfred Jewel in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford. As a child I was intrigued by the way the enamel image of King Alfred the Great was buried beneath a layer of polished crystal and the filigree metal framing that held the jewel in place.

It took many years for my own work to develop to the point where I finally recognised, and celebrated my debt to the original.
