Sandra Young

Sandra is a glass sculptor who designs and then creates each piece by hand using the technique of lamp/flame working borosilicate glass. Sandra makes predominantly solid figurative sculpture.

Sandra’s artistic education includes: Scientific Illustration – OND; 19 months training and working for Lymington Glass Mystiques, until the owner closed the business to go into semi-retirement in 1986.
Subsequently she has been self-taught, working full time as a self-employed glass sculptor for more than 33 years.
She loves the fluidity and the speed at which glass sets solid and the challenges it gives her every time she works with it, both physically and mentally. The concentration involved over an extended period of time and with the techniques she has developed makes creating each piece enormously challenging, but ultimately rewarding. She loves the magical quality of the glass and how the reflections and light work through her sculptures- this is why she often uses transparent or semi –transparent glass in her work, whether coloured or clear.

Her sculptures can be freestanding- sometimes using natural stone or wood to compliment and complete the sculpture They can be wall-hanging or they hang on a line; and she creates sculptural jewellery- including torcs. All her work is at some level inspired by the natural world. Her fantasy pieces have a relationship to the natural world as well as the imagination. Sandra also makes mirror frames and lamps.

Sandra accepts commissions. Some of the pieces shown here are sold but similar can be made to order (no two pieces are identical). Other designs are one offs. The majority of sculptures can be made in any colour of your choice.

Delivery can be arranged for most pieces to addresses on the UK mainland but the cost will depend on where and the item involved. For international orders please contact Bruntnell Astley.

Sandra can repair her own work within reason.
